The main principle of Pilates is to strengthen
the body's core postural muscles, which are deep within the body and hold the skeleton upright. This is vital for areas such
as the spine, in particular the lower back. A stong core can give the body a great deal of support and stability. Through
habitual incorrect movement, our muscles can become weak and/or tight. Pilates works to strengthen the weak muscles and stretch
the tight ones. It teaches you how to move correctly fostering good posture, which can be carried with you through everyday
life. It is a holistic form of exercise and can be adapted to suit anyone. This is one of the reasons why it has gained in
popularity amongst the medical professions such as Physiotherapists and Osteopaths, who frequently refer their clients to
Pilates teachers.
